Shopping in Berlin
The window shopping is your favorite sport? Berlin for you!
If you love shopping, Berlin is a city to experiment!
Many department stores will delight of shopping addicts: the KaDeWe, for example, is the largest store in
Europe and the most scenic one.
The Kaufhaus des Westen is located near the Tiergarten and the Kurfürstendamm in the district of
Tiergarten in Berlin. It presents 60 000 square meters to the ground and extends over seven floors.
KaDeWe was founded in 1905 by Adolf Jandorf from the Neuer Westen which included Tiergarten,
Charlottenburg and Wilmersdorf. Its construction, headed by architect Emil Schaudt, ended in April 1907
and was immediately followed by the opening of the store to the public.
The 6th and 7th floors were added in the early 1990s and are composed entirely of food shelves and
restaurants.
The area 206 and the Galeries Lafayette near the Friedrichsstrasse also worth a detour.
But French delicacies that we lack are also at the Gourmet place of Galeria Kaufhof in the city.
Also touristy, the Kurfürstendamm has lost its past attraction but still attracts tourists as the Potsdamer Platz and Fasenstrasse, which offer them a pleasant stroll to design lovers.
In September 2007, the complex of Alexa Alexanderplatz became the second largest shopping center (56,000 square meters) behind Gropius Passagen (U7 Johannisthal Chaussee). One said so much during its construction that took several years and has transformed the face of the neighborhood .. that it was given several nicknames: The pink Bunker, or the tomb of the pharaoh. The reason: an architecture, and a mix of art-deco style and Arabic that have little to do with Berlin. But the 180 stores should delight the most .. as LOXX Miniatur Welten who settled there and where is reproduced Berlin & railway in miniature on 700 square meters.
The flea market at the Avenue of 17 June (Strasse des 17. Juni) can find some original articles at a good price!
The arches are nice as well: at Potsdamer Platz, Spandau, or on the Ringbahn (Schönhauser Allee, Gesundbrunnen, etc.). Centers of commerce are all located near the S-Bahn station.
